WENDY EVANS JOSEPH, ARCHITECT

If you click onto this site and see the image of one of the bedrooms at the greenporter hotel and spa, you can see a long line of my photographs. Wendy was adamant that the images be presented this way, in a line of 4x6 images mounted in plexiglass. Every bedroom in this hotel has this configuration of images from my Shipyard Archeology series, which was shot entirely in Greenport, NY.

THE INTERVALE

The Winooski River ("Wild Onion River" in the Algonquin language) forms the northern border of Burlington, Vermont. The riverside soil of its floodplain has long been considered among the most fertile land in the state. For centuries it was farmed by the Abenaki. It remained farmland even after European colonization. 25 years ago visionary young organic gardeners and farmers, with support from the city of Burlington, recolonized the land which had been all but abandoned for some time. With a vision of sustainable local agriculture and within a five minute drive from downtown Burlington, it has become a true community resource.

I did the still photos for two recent documentary films, "The Old Intervale" (42 min.) and "The New Intervale." (29 min.) "The Old Intervale" traces the history from Native American times through the 20th century including interviews with men and women now in their 70's, 80's and 90's. "The New Intervale" follows the story from 1980 into the imagined future.

The films, directed by Kenneth Peck and produced by Will Raap for the Intervale Foundation, will be available on DVD. Meanwhile, check out the Intervale Website
